Time May Be Up On TikTok
What’s good my guys. I’m back like I never left. Let’s get The Playback going.
Tik Tok’s CEO
Tik Tok CEO Shou Zi Chew made his way to Capitol Hill to testify in front of Congress for around five hours. This is amid the ongoing call by many lawmakers to ban the app from the United States. The U.S. government recently banned the app from all government-authorized phones, and they are now considering it banning it outright.
As expected, lawmakers did not hold back from making clear their major concerns for Tik Tok’s parent company Byte’s relationship with China and the CCP. While privacy is a major issue, that was not the only one highlighted by Congress. They also put a scope on depression and suicide that was linked to app content, no real protection for minors who use the platform, as well as censorship and bias algorithms.
In response
Another topic that came from the hearing is Congress’ lack of understanding of modern technology. There were multiple occasions in which Congress members seemed confused and weren’t sure of the app’s interface or functionalities. In response, Chew made a commitment to prioritize the safety of minors and ensure the data protection of its users.
No matter how this ends, it will not come without pushback on both sides of the debate. While over 50% of Tik Tok users want the app to stay, that same percentage of people who don’t use the app, believe it should be banned.
Ticketmaster, Can You Do Something For Me
Rappers Drake and 21 Savage recently had the hip-hop community in a frenzy when they announced a joint tour coming very soon. As expected, fans of the artists went flooding to ticketmaster to grab tickets.
While people were not surprised of the price for premium seats, but when they noticed even the nose bleeds were were rather expensive, it raised some eyebrows. A Canadian law firm filed a class action lawsuit against Tickemaster citing pricing gauging. One example given was a Montreal man who paid over $700 for tickets at an arena only for an additional show to be listed in the same arena for almost 50% less. They argue that Tickemaster was previously aware of the second show and chose to manipulate pricing for their own benefit.
This is not the only suit Ticketmaster is currently battling. Taylor Swift Fans are also suing for similar practices with her tour tickets. Tickemaster has caught scrunity from Lawmakers with many accusing them of being a Monopoly and calling for them to be broken up.
